What were their struggles, and how does their story still shape our family identities today?
War of religion
Who were the Huguenots?
The Huguenots were French Protestants who followed the ideas of the Reformation initiated by Martin Luther and John Calvin in the 16th century. In a largely Catholic kingdom of France, their faith often placed them at the heart of the religious and political tensions of the time. These tensions culminated in the famous Wars of Religion (1562-1598), a period marked by bloody clashes, including the tragic St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre in 1572.
Despite the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes in 1598 by Henry IV, which granted them a certain religious freedom, their situation deteriorated again under the reign of Louis XIV. In 1685, the revocation of this edict by the Edict of Fontainebleau led to systematic persecution: destruction of temples, forced conversions and imprisonment. Faced with these hardships, many chose exile.
Exile and the legacy of the Huguenots
Nearly 200,000 Huguenots left France to seek refuge in more tolerant countries such as the Netherlands, England, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa and even the American colonies. These exiled communities brought with them artisanal, commercial and intellectual know-how that enriched their host lands. Their influence can still be found today in areas as diverse as culture, economy and even surnames.
